"We cannot part with this case without paying tribute to the claimants\' legal advisers who although greatly outnumbered by the Secretary of State\'s legal team have persisted with their requests for disclosure skilfully and with commendable determination." Third Annual Baha Mousa Lecture 2011

Public Interest Lawyers in cooperation with Matrix Chambers and the Solicitors International Human Rights Group (SIHRG) would like to invite you to attend the

Baha Mousa Annual Memorial Lecture 2011

7pm, Tuesday 13 September 2011

Sheikh Zayed Theatre, LSE, New Academic Building, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, WC2A 2AE

 “Exporting Human Rights?

The Grand Chamber, Bankovic and Al-Skeini”

Professor James Crawford

Whewell Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge; Matrix Chambers

Chaired by Roger Smith, director of JUSTICE

We very much hope you will be able to join us for another truly fascinating evening.

In two important judgments in July 2011 the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights significantly refined its position on the ECHR's application extra-territorially, especially in relation to UK forces engaged abroad. In this year’s keynote address Professor James Crawford analyses the decisions and their potential consequences.

This third annual lecture is to be held just five days after the Baha Mousa Inquiry is due to publish its report into the circumstances surrounding the death of Baha Mousa and the treatment of other Iraqi civilians who were detained with him by British soldiers in Basra.

To mark the eight year anniversary of his son’s death and the publication of the report, we are truly honoured to welcome Baha Mousa’s father, Colonel Mousa, to address the audience.

There will also be an opportunity to hear from Phil Shiner, the solicitor to the family of Baha Mousa, who after seven years working on this case, will consider the findings of the Baha Mousa Inquiry Report. The talks will be followed by a lively Q and A session, after which we hope you can join us at a drinks reception.
